Proofreading
Proofreading is the final editing step before publication and deals with the finer details. During a proofread, I will check your work for errors relating to:
-
Spellings
-
Grammar
-
Punctuation (including use of quotation marks, hyphens, dashes, brackets, colons, semi-colons etc.)
-
Word breaks
-
Spacing
-
Headers and footers/ page numbers
-
Missing or repeated text
Ahead of the project starting, I will conduct a free sample edit of up to 1,000 words so I can provide an evaluation, timeline, and cost estimate for the project. This is also an opportunity for you to make sure I am the right fit for you. You can read more about the importance of a sample edit here.
Before commencing we will discuss your preferences, including if you are working with a style guide e.g. New Hart’s Rules or Chicago Manual of Style.
Usually, a proofread is conducted in the final layout file (PDF) so any issues with layout can be addressed. However, I am happy to work in PDF using PDF comments, or in Word using Track Changes.
My aim is to help you achieve consistency throughout your work, without compromising your voice, so you are ready for publication.
If you are looking for a more substantial edit, you may need a copyedit. I explain more about the differences in my blog post. If you are still unsure, please get in touch and we can discuss the needs of your individual project.
If you are interested in using this service, please drop me an email at susannahbutler.edits@gmail.com with some brief information about your project (type of project/ genre, word count, synopsis, budget, and timeline), or use the contact form.
